CONCEPT // THE FORK AWAKENS
“May the fourth be with you.”
For sci-fi nerds, May 4th, is a national holiday. As today’s date rolls off the tongue, it can be likened to a greeting universally known from the Star Wars trilogies. In the most famous space-odyssey in history, ‘may the force be with you,’ has achieved cult-status as the unofficial greeting used by devoted fans of these movies. Numerous Star Wars ‘groupies’ began embracing the fourth day in May as a day of celebration for the importance that these films still play in pop-culture… And hey! The phrases do sound similar.
But being a nerd doesn’t just mean you like sci-fi movies. I for one, am a sports-nerd, a self-proclaimed ASU super-fan, and Sun Devil football junkie. With numerous brands in virtually every industry getting in the mix with ‘Star Wars Day’ graphics and greetings, I decided to put a galactic spin on something I’m totally nerdy over: the Arizona State Sun Devils football program.
We often give a nod to an infamous, recurring Star Wars character during the football season. Think about it… Most college football programs show some love to one of the trilogy’s most polarizing characters at least once a year. When a school heads out of the locker room
on the opposing team’s planetin the opposing team’s stadium, they occasionally do so donning the ‘Stormtrooper look,’ a uniform combination reminiscent of the soldiers of the Republic Army. The Stormtrooper’s futuristic, pearly-white armor has had people enamored with these faceless enforcers of evil for over 40 years, and their helmets & upper-body padding liken them to football players. When a college football team wears a white helmet and accompanying white jerseys & pants, the ‘Stormtrooper look’ is in full effect…
But why can’t it be even more cerimonious? More, official? Enter, Adidas.
Adidas and ASU began a eight-year partnership in July of this year, but Adidas & Lucas Films LTD. have been in business together since 2009. Adidas has various licensing rights with Star Wars including rights to produce Star Wars-branded athletic footwear and apparel… ‘And a hush falls over the Trademark Police!’ Hushhhhhhhhh.
The Sun Devil football program is all about innovating and embracing new things. Why not use an valuable and recognizable brand in American pop-culture as a symbol for their modern, Adidas football uniforms? How about in a game during the 2015 season? Don’t forget, it would be just a few months ahead of the release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, the seventh installment in the Star Wars saga
Intoducing: “The Fork Awakens.”
The Helmet ///
The helmet is designed with a glossy finish over specific graphic elements to mimic a Stormtrooper’s protective headgear. With a mirrored, uni-lateral look of a Stormtrooper helmet, the details on the football helmet above will make this Sun Devil uniform look more Star Wars than any before it.
The Uniforms ///
The jerseys and pants can’t just be ‘all-white’ anymore as that has narrative has been played out. Graphic elements from a Stormtrooper’s upper-body padding adorn the sleeves. Black color hits make an appearance on these jerseys to mimic the base layer of a Stormtrooper uniform and represent the Sun Devils as black is a school color.
The Coaches ///
You can’t forget the coaches! The
squadron leaderscoaches of the Sun Devil football program will wear white Adidas Climacool pants and polos that mirror the simplistic uniform worn by the players to unify the team with a completely white look…
…And then there ‘s Coach Graham, or, ‘Darth Defense’ as I would prefer to call him. Coach Graham is the most intimidating, menacing leader in the entire
galaxy conference and is the only member of the team who will not wear white. He gets an all-black Climacool outfit from Adidas with a red, ‘lightsaber-esque’ pitchfork that pays homage to, well, you kn0w…
Enjoy. And ‘may the fourth be with you.’ Go Devils!
